Text Art Directory

Journal Entry: Sat Jul 14, 2007, 11:20 AM
Today I recommend: Not writing your journal at 2am. You'll just end up writing it all over again the following day.

Hello my friends.

Once upon a time there was a large number of computer manufactures. They spent years making themselves the best. Then came along standards. This forced people to abide by the rules. Basically all text has to work on all platforms.

So then came along the ASCII and ANSI artists. They colored our screen before the internet. Their work founded the design that you see today. I get very excited about this.

Today the typography movement continues to move forward. It can be argued that this began when the first bible was printed.

Gallery Standards

The text art galleries are independent for a reason. Text art is art work in which the main focus of the image is the text. With that being said, please submit logos to the Logo's and Logotypes gallery.

If you don't know what ANSI/ASCII art is please do some research before ever submitting anything in their respective galleries. More details to follow:

Typography

This is where the majority of text art within our community will be submitted. It is artwork created by any means in which the text is the main focus of the image. They can be in either raster or vector formats.

Good examples of typography:

ASCII Art

This category is very specific. All art work that is submitted here should be created in a mono type font from an OS's shell. This includes non-exclusively DOS/LINUX/UNIX operating systems. Check out the almighty Wikipedia for details.

A very good example of ASCII art on dA:

ANSI Art

Another very specific category. This should be created in a mono type font from an OS's shell which uses the ANSI.SYS driver or emulator to render. This is very similar to ASCII art accept that it uses drawing specific characters and color. ANSI art also has limited animation support but this functionality is not currently supported by deviantART. Check the Wikipedia for more details!.

About ANSI/ASCII Conversions

Those that are familiar with these galleries are likely to understand that there is software which allows you to convert rasterized art into text mode. For the time being converted text mode images will not be considered policy violations by this gallery director. Please submit copyright concerns or rip reports to the help desk.

Why? Policy regarding this needs to be clarified.

Policy Violations

The only time that I deal with policy violations as per the galleries that I am responsible for is when something has been miscatagorized. All other inquiries should be reported to the help desk. Please report art work which has been submitted to the wrong gallery! I will at no time be outright deleting anyone's deviation. Should a miscatagorized image be found they will be placed in the deviant's respective scraps where it can be moved by the owner.

Daily Deviations

I am very glad to accept daily deviation suggestions. Please send me a note about any text art that you feel is something other people should be looking at. On that note, when submitting suggestions to me please isolate them to the text galleries. If your suggestion is not text art related you can find a listing of gallery directors at *stafflist.

dAmn Chatter

I have #textart locked into auto join. Whenever I am on deviantART you will be able to find me there. I promise.

The Plan For July

For now I will be focusing my efforts on building relationships with my fellow gallery directors as well as the people that submit art to the text art galleries. Daily Deviations will continue to be updated so that people can see what's happening with text art on a regular basis. For now any future contests and gallery specific newsletters will be kept under lock and key until we get to know each other. Any input is appreciated.

I've taken a couple days thinking about this message. To be honest, I am not one to edit for the wikipedia. I have a great deal of respect for those that do. I am one person out of a great deal many that love text art. Therefore I'd prefer if other people write it. I have loved text art since my first BBS but maybe you know a little more than I do. It's not to say that I don't see the $'s and b's.

I trust your opinion. You engage in it far more than I do. I sort of envy that.

thanks... RaD Man and Dmoz Editor with the name SheDragon get me into this [link] and guys like Jason Scott (textfiles.com) and Ben Garrett (Defacto2.net) stirred it.

I just spend some time this past weekend to extend the content at RoySAC.com. Some content of the ASCII art primer should look familar to you hehe [link] I also created a designated SAC section [link] I already collected the content. Now I just have to create the pages, convert data etc etc. :)
